Samsung's latest flagship smartphones and wearables are now lighter and slimmer, packed with advanced AI features designed to attract high-end consumers.
Since pioneering the foldable smartphone market in 2019, Samsung has faced growing competition. According to Canalys, Samsung’s share of foldable phone shipments fell from 81% in 2022 to 63% in 2023, underscoring the significance of this latest launch.
In response to market dynamics, Samsung has made notable enhancements to its foldable devices:
- Galaxy Z Fold 6: This model features a wider screen and is the lightest and slimmest in its series, targeting new customers interested in foldable technology.
- Galaxy Z Flip 6: The clamshell design now boasts longer battery life, a higher resolution camera, and a new vapor chamber for improved cooling, addressing key customer feedback.
After maintaining stable prices for three years despite rising material costs, Samsung has modestly increased prices. The Z Flip 6 is priced at $1,099.99, and the Z Fold 6 starts at $1,899.99, each representing a $100 increase over last year’s models.
Enhanced AI Features
Samsung has introduced several new AI-powered features:
- Listening Mode: Provides simultaneous voice interpretation when paired with Galaxy Buds earphones.
- Collaboration with Google: Developed new AI search functions, such as displaying step-by-step solutions to math problems when circled on the screen.
Improved Galaxy Watch Series
Significant upgrades have been made to the Galaxy Watch products:
- 3-nanometer Chip: This new chip triples application booting and processing efficiencies compared to last year’s model.
- US FDA Approval: The watch is now approved as a monitoring device for sleep apnea.
- New Features: Includes measurement of functional threshold power (FTP) for cycling and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) related to diabetes.
Introducing the Galaxy Ring
Samsung has also unveiled the Galaxy Ring, priced at $399.99. Available in gold, silver, and black, it features a titanium frame, 10ATM water resistance, and an IP68 rating. Measuring 7mm wide and 2.6mm thick, it weighs between 2.3 and 3g, depending on the size.
The Galaxy Ring functions as a health tracker, equipped with an accelerometer, optical heart rate sensor, and skin temperature sensor. It can monitor sleep, heart rate, and activity, introducing new AI-powered metrics like Energy Score and Wellness Tips. It offers 6-7 days of battery life and comes with a unique, transparent charging case that holds 1.5 times the charge.
Industry analyst Jack Leathem from Canalys emphasizes the importance of AI-powered health and fitness features in wearables, noting that they are "core to attracting brand switchers in the premium segment" and crucial for differentiating Samsung from other smartwatch vendors.
Compatibility and Unique Features
The Galaxy Ring is compatible with Android phones running the Samsung Health app, with some features exclusive to Galaxy phones. A standout feature for Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 users (soon to be available on the S24) is the ability to control the phone’s camera or dismiss alarms using a double pinch gesture on the ring.
Market Availability
The new lineup of products, including foldable phones, watches, and the ring, will be available starting July 24 in South Korea, North America, and Europe. This marks a significant step in Samsung’s strategy to innovate and compete in the high-end smartphone and wearable markets.
By integrating advanced AI features and enhancing their flagship devices, Samsung demonstrates a strong commitment to leading the market in both smartphones and wearables. Their focus on user-friendly technology and health monitoring features aims to capture the attention of premium consumers and maintain a competitive edge.
